Epi-LASIK / AST (Advanced Surface Treatment)

Today's Surface Refractive Procedures

Epi-LASIK/Advanced Surface Treatment (AST) is our procedure of choice for eyes requiring surface treatment. Surface procedures involve no cutting of the cornea and are less likely to induce dry eye syndrome. These surface procedures combine the best qualities of other surface treatments (PRK, Epi-LASEK), thus has improved both the speed of visual recovery and the comfort after treatment.

Surface procedures often are an option for patients who have previously been told they were not candidates for laser vision correction. These reasons include: Thin corneas, dry eyes, active lifestyle or occupation (athletes, law enforcement, military), patients desiring more conservative eye procedure, etc.

The long term success and safety of surface treatments are well documented.

The Procedure

The epithelium is the top outer skin layer of the cornea, and is the only layer of the cornea to regenerate. This painless 10 minute procedure begins with the gentle removal of this outer skin layer over the central cornea. The laser is then applied to the structural layer of the eye to change its shape and correct the vision. A clear, soft contact lens is applied which acts like a bandage and helps healing.

During the post-operative period, this surface skin regenerates and the bandage contact is removed. The comfort and vision vary for 4-7 days while the eye is healing; however, vision is usually adequate to drive and return to work soon after the bandage lens is removed.

Realistic Expectations

► The goal is to reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

► Recovery time slightly longer than LASIK

► Slight discomfort during the healing period

► These trade offs are temporary and are justified by the benefits.

► Neither you doctor nor the equipment manufacturers can guarantee the results, that the procedure will provide perfect vision, or that it will eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.

► As with any surgical procedure, there are risks.

► We will provide you with additional information about the procedure, possible side effects and complications, the post-operative healing regimen, and alternative procedures, so that you can make an informed decision.

Summary

LASIK and Epi-LASIK/AST are equally effective; both are performed with the same laser and yield the same great outcome. The extensive experience of Dr. Rick Milne, Dr Brian Huff, Dr Matthew Clary, and the entire Eye Center staff is imperative in selecting the optimal technique for each eye. It is our goal to design a personalized treatment plan using the best and safest technique for each individual.
